Making a Healthy Impact
Approximately 30,000 children die each day, 2/3 of them because they lack © HealthStore Foundation access to high quality medical care and essential drugs that often cost less than a cup of coffee. A short list of preventable and treatable diseases accounts for approximately 70% of childhood illness and death. Most do not have access to essential medications, or they live too far away from help.
The HealthStore Foundation is a non-profit corporation founded in 1997. Its mission is to increase access to essential medication, basic healthcare, and prevention services for children and families in the developing world.
Scott Hillstrom founded the HealthStore Foundation, the parent company of the CFW Franchise System. The network of small clinics, branded CFWshops®, was launched using a franchise business format which is recognized today as one of the leading examples of Social Franchising in the world. Michael and several past chairman of the International Franchise Association and board members of the IFA make up the Executive Committee of the HealthStore Foundation. CFW is a member of the International Franchise Association and Michael, as Chief Concept Officer, is CFW's representative at the IFA.

Today, the network has grown to 82 clinics and drug shops owned and operated by Kenyan nurses and health workers in rural Kenya, plus 3 “company-owned” clinics in Rwanda. Through 2009, CFWshops successfully treated over 540,000 patients, including almost 50,000 for Malaria and 60,000 for respiratory infections.
The franchise model has answered the need for basic life-saving healthcare in the rural areas of Kenya, while also providing participating franchisees the opportunity to own their own business and sustain a comfortable living.
Michael also serves as the Chairperson of the IFA's Social Sector Franchising Task Force, which was established to harness the resources of IFA members to use the technology of Business Format Franchising to solve the critical health and social needs for the poor worldwide.
Michael continues to consider the development of other commercial business format franchisors in developing countries to improve the human condition and have a world-changing impact on poverty, diseases, and economic development.
